Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman

'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' has been plastered all over bookshops since its release in 2017. Reese Witherspoon has already bought the rights to create the film version and, as someone who has heard the great feedback from many of Bay Tree's own lovely customers, it was an obvious choice for a holiday read.

Eleanor is a 30 year old woman living life in suffocating routine: work Monday to Friday with the same meal deal lunch and crossword each day, and 2 bottles of vodka to keep herself sane over the dragging, lonely weekends. That is, until she finds 'the One'!

Eleanor's character is so easy to warm to and, for me, reading this book felt like revisiting a friend: her narrative voice is as witty as it is quirky. Honeyman completely engages the reader with a mixture of dry humour and leading statements that lace the novel with unease, keeping the reader guessing until the last second.

My favourite part was Eleanor's first bikini wax on her painstaking quest to beautify herself: unassuming and excited by her new motivation to become a better woman, it felt rewarding to 'watch' Eleanor realise her only true motivation should be improving her own well being. It was heartwarming to see her mentality change as guided by new friends she made along the way.

I hated having to finish this book, although it ends very much open for our own interpretation - the reader is able to create their own 'Eleanor' story long after the book is over.

I would SO recommend this book for an uplifting, rewarding, easy read on this long, hot summer!

'Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine' (Gail Honeyman) is available in Bay Tree Books!  £8.99

Thank you for reading, Evie x
